A nation where migrants and their families are empowered with comprehension to advocate for their workers and human rights, become creators and lead a healthy improved quality of life and sustainable employment.
Vision
We aim to create a framework of reflection and promotion of labor rights, as well as work towards improving conditions for temporary and permanent placement agency workers regardless of their immigration status
Background and rational
The Migrant Workers Association of Lesotho is a non-governmental organization that is independent and not-for-profit making. An indigenous organization that is legally registered in Lesotho that advocates for the respect of human rights for migrant workers and their families. It further advocates for the full enjoyment of basic and public goods and services by migrant workers and their families without any discrimination based on one’s migration status. The organizational programs include issues on labor migration, immigration, elections, education, health, democracy, human rights, climate change, sexual reproductive health rights, counter trafficking, good governance, and rule of law
The target communities include farm workers, mining (miners and ex-miners), domestic workers, construction workers, street vendors, taxies and truck drivers, factory workers, job seekers and self-employed migrants who are exposed to hazardous health situations and who are considered low skilled laborers and their fundamental workers’ rights are ignored.
The objectives for the organization thus include;
• Promote the rights and welfare of the migrant communities and their families in the host countries.
• Mobilize and document the different challenges and experience that migrants and their families are exposed to in host country.
• Empower migrant and their families with knowledge and skills in income generation and food security for sustained living.
• To promote alliances, networks, coalitions and partnerships with agencies working on migration matters regarding health like Tuberculosis, Silicosis and HIV/AIDS.
• To work closely with the government line Ministries; Labor, Health, Mining and Foreign Affairs in promoting sound systems in recruitment and placement of migrant workers in different working conditions that are healthy and also employer accountability is guaranteed.
• Promote advocacy among migrant workers in shunning abusive and illegal recruitment of migrant workers in development working environments.
Approach of the organization to Migration issues.
The Association has three pillars in approaching the migrant issues;
Prevention
The Association shall do the following;
• Create awareness of dangers of migration policies regarding staying and working in another country.
• Ensure that migrant workers are registered and their employers are known and have been offered proper working documents that guarantee their health.
• Ensure that relevant work documents are obtained before going out of country for employment.
• Regular keep track of migrant employee’s welfare through establishing a toll free line.
• Create awareness on health issues and disseminate information
Protection
Those that are facing challenges in their work places and their families due to legal redress
• Identify volunteer lawyers to help them address the issues
• Link migrants to relevant departments for them to access justice
• Interpret policies for migrants
• Engage the employers through their trade unions and management using the government laid down labor policies
Rehabilitation and reintegration
• Equip migrants with knowledge and skills that can enable them become job creators or be employed
• Support migrants get back to home country through working with their relevant embassies
• Visiting and coordinating the migrants every quarter and sharing their plight with the line ministries.
